about the artists:
Anzenberger Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition „HandMade“ of works by the Hungarian artist Minyó Szert Károly (*1955 New Delhi), the Portuguese artist Rui Vilela (*1979 Coimbra) and the Austrian photographer Christopher Mavrič (*1985 Bruck/Mur). The upcoming show consists of three different personalities, which have one common ground: they all somehow play with the medium of photography.
Minyó Szert Károly for example uses different and unusual kinds of backing material (background) for his handmade shadow-pictures like wood, flake board, cardboard, etc. aswell as his own produced emulsion. So does Christopher Mavrič, his street-photographs are developed on ceramic tiles, and Rui Vilela works with painting-over historical photographs referring to an event that occurred in the late 19thcentury in Berlin. Every project, though speaking of its own individual story, also shares one approach: to constitute the illusion of photography appear like painting, or give photography a pictorial attendance.
Minyó will hold a special performance with his light-bike on the evening of the opening of the exhibition. With the transformation of one Gallery room into a darkroom he allows the audience a fascinating insight into the process of developing a photograph in an absolutely extraordinary way. The other exhibited photographic paintings of the artist – a retrospective selection combined with new artworks - sometimes leave the spectator in the dark; sometimes one is confronted with quite simple themes, most of them seem to be seen through translucent glass, like people taking the stairway, a dancing couple, a black dog, a chair, spoons or a bike – as in his Minyó-Boxes. Minyó creates attention with what he does; he makes the observer start to ask questions about his work.
"The brown Disaster” or “Documents”, a project of Rui Vilela from 2009 deals with our basic need for water. By the end of the 19th century groundwater has to be used to meet the growing demands of the city of Berlin. Unknown at that time was the iron-rich character of groundwater in the region. Rust was formed as the water was brought to the surface and came in contact with air. For several months, a great part of the city lost access to drinkable water, forcing the waterworks to once again use lakes as its source until the problem could be solved. With his project the photographer wants to explore technical innovation and new processes that yield unexpected unsatisfying results. Insufficient knowledge sometimes causes systems to fail with calamitous results. Communities relying on these unverified processes are vulnerable and can thereby become casualties of progress.
Christopher Mavričs project “counter parts” (dt. “Gegenstücke”) of the last two years confronts us with snapshots, all taken in the streets of his home country. The photographer works with exceptional perspectives, detailed shot sections and fuzziness as aids of stylistic device. Furthermore Mavrič wants the developing process onto a tile to work together with the motif to create additional connotations or a supplement level of meaning. Every single piece is unique and due to the manufacturing procedure and the used tooling equipment, it can’t be produced twice a time in precise the same way by him. Image interferences like cracks, color changes, wrinkles and pimples or other picture errors are intended. His using of tiles as background material for his photographs attracts special attention to the technical aspect of his work, and this is exactly what makes Mavričs pictures so appealing.
We are looking forward to see you!
Best regards,
Regina Maria Anzenberger
